The opportunities
for the participation in intercollegiate athletics by Maryville students continue to be
excellent. We place the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational
experience and seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete's
activities are conducted as an integral part of the educational experience.
We also seek
to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity
among the student-athletes, faculty and staff.
Students interested in making a commitment to and
competing on an athletic team have a number of sports from which to choose. At the intercollegiate level,
Maryville fields teams in eight men's sports and nine women's
sports.
Maryville is a member of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes at the Division III level.
Maryville is also a charter member of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SLIAC).
Maryville's approach to athletics is to promote individual and team skill development.
Emphasis on fair play and athletics at amateur status is most important. Primary emphasis
is given to in-season competition, but exceptional teams and individuals may participate
in post-season championships.
The intercollegiate athletics program encourages participation from the student body
and provides a challenge to those who enjoy the excitement of competition. Students who
participate in intercollegiate athletics will find that their education at Maryville
is greatly enhanced by this involvement.
